Artistic Research and Recreation
I grew up at the base of Mt baldy. At 10,066 ft, it's the highest peak in the San Gabriel mountain range in Southern California. Artistic Research and Recreation is a geographical-visual-poetic-life enhancing exploration connected to my fascination to the spirit of Mount Baldy. This is unseated Tongva territory, whom named the peak 'Joat'. The name 'Mt Baldy' came from early miners who used powerful water blasting on the mountain canyons for 30 years searching for gold, destroying animal habitat, polluting the water and disfiguring the natural beauty. Both names refer to the peak which is a tree barren, rock landscape that appears from flatland to be bald or snow peaked. The area is a very spiritual, childhood place to me. I go back to tap into my curious self, revisiting to re-imagine. Using various film photographic techniques, painting, observational notes and drawing to capture the ontological experience in the mountain range. I created a zine, photographs, a poster and have had one solo exhibition with this material.
